Many motorists speed up whilst overtaking –a bad habit which is causing thousands of accidents a year.
Around 8,000 vehicles are involved in overtaking collisions annually, something which The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is eager to address to modern drivers.
“The common-sense message is do not overtake unless you are sure you can complete the manoeuvre safely and without causing risk or inconvenience to another road user,” warns an RoSPA spokesman.
“Although you should complete an overtaking manoeuvre quickly, never exceed the speed limit for the road.”
In line with the words of the RoSPA, overtake in a safe and legal manner. Rule 125 of the Highway Code states that the speed limit is the absolute maximum you should drive on any road, and this does not exclude overtaking.
Exceeding the speed limit for any reason is always dangerous, and illegal. Getting caught speeding can set you back with a fine of up to £2,500, alongside six points on your licence, depending on the road you were speeding on. In the long term, 12 points or more on a license within three years will see your license taken away – which brings an end to your pco car hire career.
Be calm, stay safe, and keep your driving career on the straight and narrow!
