The European Union have decided that from 2022, all vehicles sold across Europe will contain a speed limiting technology, known as Intelligent Speed Assistance – or ISA for short. It is hoped ISA will be a revolution in road safety, preventing drivers from breaking the speed limits they’re bound by.
Not only is this set to be fitted into all new cars within the next three years, but The Department for Transport say that the UK will follow suit even after its withdrawal from the EU.
The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) claim that ISA systems will be able to reduce collisions by up to 30% and save around 25,000 lives within 15 years. They do this by limiting the engine power, preventing the vehicle from accelerating
In case the tech proves unpopular with drivers, the ETSC also proposes an on/off switch to be included at first, which allows the system to be overridden by pushing hard on the accelerator. This option is ideal for drivers should speeding be a necessity and would allow rules for the system to develop over time.
New cars will also be equipped with data loggers to help track the system under recommendations from the ETSC.
Commuting in London may not always require high speed driving for a pco car hire driver, but such changes might become a requirement not just for new cars in the future, but pco companies and customers too. Safety is certainly the future for the driving industry, and it’s worth checking into Pace Hire to read on these developments as they happen.
