A recent study has revealed that millions of drivers still do not understand the order of traffic lights. At least 1 in 10 believe a single amber light is followed by a green signal, whilst 13% believe it red and amber go together. Just less than 75% got it right in saying an amber lead to a red or green light accordingly.
Over 50% of drivers are unaware than verbally abusing another driver can result in a fine; 48% still don’t know that it’s illegal to pay at a drive-thru with a smart phone, even if your engine is off and your handbrake is down. But to counter that, 50% of the drivers didn’t know that you can use your mobile phone while driving to call 999…
These stats emerged from a quiz created by Jardine Motors Group, as part of its ongoing campaign to help raise awareness of road safety. Worryingly, just 2% of the 1,558 drivers who took part got all 12 questions correct.
Spokesman Matt Wrigley said:
“Our Driving Genius quiz highlighted a number of areas where misunderstanding exists, particularly around new rules which have been introduced since that magical moment that we passed our test”
A roundup of the problems are as follows:
- 1 in 7 are unaware its an offence to use a handheld phone when supervising a learner driver.
- 45% believe in the event of a breakdown, it’s okay to leave an animal in the vehicle
- 1 in 100 drivers admitted that rather than pulling into a service station to have a rest when tired, they simply put their foot down to reach the destination in less time.
These findings be comical, but they underline a serious misunderstanding of driver rules and regulations, which could endanger many others.
