Every day, up to 4,000 drivers will be caught breaking the law in the big city of London.
These incredible figures came from drivers frequently being shot on camera committing moving traffic offences – in the period of 2017/18 alone across 29 London boroughs, approximately 1.5 million Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued. Examples of those traffic offences are listed below:
- Stopping on a yellow box junction
- Driving into a bus lane
- Driving the wrong way down a one-way street
- Driving in cycle lanes
- Failing to give way to oncoming road users
These latest statistics reveal the City of London council to have handed out the most PCNs last year, issuing 192,841 notices – worth around £25 million in total, these represent a year-on-year increase of 1663%. It’s believed that local authorities of London can collect anything between £93 million and £187 million from PCNs!
Second and third with the most charges were Barnet with 88,578 and Islington of 78,743 respectively. The residents of Bexley seem to be the most behaved, providing the lowest figures of 11,365.
The figures have come after a recent report from MPs suggesting that local authorities in the UK should be give more power to catch motorists committing (moving) traffic offences. This has not been received well, for many believe that such ‘offences’ may come from junctions being set up unfairly; poor traffic light efficiency; or even just a general bad design of the road.
What’s not been revealed is how these statistics relate to pco car rentals or uber car rentals; but the frequency of offences, as mentioned above, mean its difficult for any driver to avoid a PCN. Knowing what constitutes for a moving traffic offence is the first step; you should also keep up to date with any changes to the laws themselves, and be aware of any developments on roads and junctions you may frequently drive through.
